Few things are more enjoyable in life than receiving a good massage. It’s one of the best ways to unwind after a long week at work, de-stress after a difficult family gathering, or to just pamper yourself when you feel the need. You want to get the most out of this life-enhancing event, and the key to that is to make sure you communicate your needs and wants to your massage therapist. Here are some great tips to keep in mind the next time you’re heading into your favorite spa  for a little hands-on TLC:

It’s About You. Maybe you’re the kind of person who’s not used to speaking up on your own behalf. After all, you don’t want to appear to be too picky or needy. You’re probably even just grateful for the chance to relax. Let go of those concerns and remind yourself that this massage is about you. You’re the client who’s there to receive the benefits of the massage. Your massage therapist is committed to doing a great job and the more you are able to communicate before and during the massage, the more likely he or she will be able to give you a wonderful massage.

The Pre-Massage Message. Before the massage takes place, update the therapist with any health information they should know about. This is also the time be clear about your own expectations, needs and wants for the massage. Remember that the service provider is a massage therapist, not a mind-reader!  This could include areas where you store extra attention such as neck and shoulders; parts of your body you don’t like touched (think ticklish feet!); or areas that require a lighter touch, such as an injured knee or shoulder.

Tools of the Trade. Every massage therapist has their own set of preferred tools of the trade. They may use hot stones, lotions, oils, even powders that reduce the friction between their hands and your skin. It’s up to you ask about these to make sure you’re not allergic or sensitive to anything the therapist might use. The therapist will probably be able to come up with an acceptable substitute if needed. Similarly, if you dislike a particular item (for me, it’s oil) or prefer only unscented lotions, be sure to advise before you get started.

Soundscapes. Many therapists like to have recorded music playing to aid in relaxing you. But if you hate what’s being played, or find music in general to be more of a distraction, let the therapist know. Again, the therapist will either have a wide selection from which to choose in order to meet your needs or agree to just stop the music.

Table Talk. Some therapists enjoy chatting with clients during a massage! If you prefer the silent treatment, just say so. At the outset, you can just mention how much you’re looking forward to a quiet and relaxing massage.  On the flipside, many clients finds that complete silences makes them uncomfortable and small talk puts them at ease. Don’t be afraid to make a little small talk if you need to.  Your therapist is sure to engage.

Don’t Wait. If you start experiencing any discomfort or problems during the massage, don’t hesitate to mention it. Whether the therapist is going too deep or too fast, the room is too cold, or your right shoulder blade needs extra attention. Remember, this is about you.  It’s easy to make small adjustments if you just say the word.
